Class II, Holy Child School

Bhabna, 7, loves to dance. “I want to be a Kathak dancer when I grow up,” the little girl, who is about to complete two years of training in the classical dance, said.

“She has been learning Kathak under Marami Medhi at Sur Sangam, Rajgarh, over the past couple of years. Her classes are scheduled on weekends. My younger brother, Hemanta Kalita, who is a Kathak dancer, has been her inspiration,” Bhabna’s mother, Gitika Kalita Hazarika, a teacher at Sankardev Sishu Niketan in Jonali, said.

Bhabna is fortunate to be part of a family associated with music. Her mother is a classical singer. Her father, Abhijit Hazarika, plays the guitar while her grandmother, Nirupama Hazarika, is a violin artiste.

Gitika said, “I had a music school, Sangeet Sarothi, at my Milanpur-Chandmari residence. There I taught my daughter modern dance when she was about four years old and classical vocal over the past year. However, with my husband posted in Arunachal Pradesh, I had to take additional responsibilities on the home front. Subsequently, I had to close the school. It has been closed for over a year now. But I am happy to be Bhabna’s first guru.”

Bhabna has taken part in a number of modern dance competitions since 2009. “My daughter has taken part in competitions at AEI auditorium, Tirthanath Sabhaghar, Silpukhuri and in school events. She’s a quick learner and picks up steps fast — from television programmes and elsewhere. She has also taken part in a children's play, Lachit Borphukan, which I had directed. It was televised by Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati.”

Since February, the Class II student has been learning Bihu under Bolin Bora, Lipi Bora and Raju Baruah. “She attended a session from February to May this year, during which she danced Bihu on stage. At Rajgarh Bihutoli, she bagged the second prize in the Mou Kuwori competition,” said Gitika.

In her leisure time, Bhabna loves watching reality shows on dance and cartoons. “I love watching Dance India Dance and Chhota Bheem,” the soft-spoken girl said.
