Why James is surprised

Nagpur: India’s strategy to declare the innings on the fourth day morning of the final Test, here, took even the Englishmen by surprise.

“We were a little bit surprisedů We felt that the first thing they might do is declaring the innings in the morning.

“Also, we certainly thought (Ravichandran) Ashwin would come out more aggressive than he was. But to be honest, we, too, played really well in that session.

“They batted for an hour, but still couldn’t get ahead of us and we took time out of the game, which is good for us,” pacer James Anderson said.

Although England seem poised to wrap up the series 2-1, Anderson reminds that his team still has a long way to go.

“How we start tomorrow will be very important. The first hour will be crucial.

“So if we can get through that, we can then hopefully build a couple of good partnerships to make sure things are on the safe side,” he stressed.

Anderson cites the nature of the pitch as the reason behind England’s ultra-defensive batting. “I’m not sure whether the pitch really allows you to be too attacking. Yesterday we saw two of the more attacking batsmen India have got — (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni and (Virat) Kohli — scoring at a run rate of two and over for most parts of the day.

“It’s not a pitch where you can increase the run rate, especially with both the teams having to set very negative fields. We just tried to bat normally,” he explained.

Anderson didn’t feel that Jonathan Trott did anything wrong when he walked towards the ball that slipped from Ravindra Jadeja’s grip and hit it to the boundary.

Trott also exchanged a few words with Ishant Sharma and Virat Kohli after a confident caught behind appeal against him was rejected by the umpire.

Thereafter, he got into an argument with Ashwin, who threatened to run him out for backing up too far.

Anderson, however, brushed aside the incident with Ishant and Kohli before categorically mentioning that Trott actually enjoyed those moments in the middle.
