Whiff of suicide bid by murder accused

An accused in the Dr Prabhat Kumar murder case is suspected to have tried to commit suicide on Sunday night at the prisoners’ ward of MGM Medical College and Hospital, where he has been undergoing treatment for stomach ailment for the past four months.

Mohammed Ehtasam, alias Kabir, was shifted from the hospital’s prisoners ward to the ICU on Monday morning after he complained of chest pain. However, there were cut marks — appeared to have been caused by a sharp object like a razor or knife — on his right hand with sources claiming that he had tried to slit his wrist at night.

However, police did not confirm the suicide attempt neither did they deny it. Kabir, on the other hand, maintained that he sustained the injuries after falling down but gave different versions to mediapersons.

Inspector Bijay Kumar, who is looking into the sudden deterioration of Kabir’s condition, initially said that the undertrial had to be admitted to ICU as he was suffering from chest pain. When asked about the deep gashes on Kabir’s right wrist, he said: “From what Kabir told us, we took it as a medical case. He did not say anything about the injuries that he sustained on one of his hands. May be he tried to take his life,” the inspector said.

Kabir gave contrary statements. “I slipped on the tiled verandah while going to the bathroom at night,” he told The Telegraph.

His version to another group of scribes was different. He told them that he got injured after falling down from the bed at the prisoners’ ward. The policeman, who was with him at night, refused to say anything.

Kabir (28) was arrested in January 2010 in connection to the Prabhat Kumar murder case.

He is also an accused in the serial firing cases registered at various police stations of the city between December 17, 2009, and January 25, 2010. Kabir was first lodged at Ghaghidih Central Jail but was shifted to Ghatshila sub-divisional jail last July after getting involved in a group clash with other inmates.
