Adoption ruling

New Delhi, Dec. 9 (PTI): A Delhi court has ruled that a mother cannot give her child up for adoption without the father’s consent.

The court said under the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act, if the father is alive, he alone has the right to put the child up for adoption. The court gave the ruling while hearing a man’s plea challenging his wife’s petition seeking maintenance for herself and their minor daughter, who he claimed she had given up in adoption.

Skoda fined

New Delhi (PTI): A consumer forum has ordered Skoda Auto India Pvt Ltd to pay Rs 20.17 lakh to a customer for selling him a defective car. The forum held that the car had to be taken for repairs 33 times in two years for which Viney Sagar Sahgal had to pay Rs 1.65 lakh. Some of them were manufacturing defects.

Pooja relief

Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court has quashed a lower court order to initiate criminal proceedings against actress-turned-producer Pooja Bhatt for alleged obscenity over a poster of her 2005-film Rog. The proceedings were initiated based on a complaint by activist Vinod Jain.

Dowry deaths

Nizamabad (PTI): A constable has allegedly killed his wife and daughter over dowry demands, Andhra Pradesh police said. T. Venkatesh hit his wife and seven-year-old daughter with a blunt weapon causing multiple head injuries because of which they died. The constable is absconding.

Elephant kills

Coimbatore (PTI): An estate worker was trampled to death on Saturday night in Coimbatore’s Valparai, police said. A group of workers were trying to drive away a herd of elephants when a pachyderm turned towards the worker and trampled him, the police added.

Elderly raped

Mumbai (PTI): A 61-year-old woman was allegedly raped and robbed by an unidentified person on Friday who entered her house impersonating a courier boy, police said on Sunday. The police are trying to make a sketch of the man based on the Powai resident’s description.
