Fortnight wait for flat station road

- Recce of how two A-listers — Tatanagar & capital junction — fare on revamp scorecard

For outstation-bound patients, the trip on 500 metres of Tatanagar Overbridge Road used to be like facing an operating theatre without anaesthesia.

For over five years, the stretch has been a bone-rattling ride for residents of Burmamines, Golmuri, Telco, Baridih, Sidhgora, Agrico, Sitaramdera, Birsanagar and several other areas of central, eastern and southern pockets on their way to Tatanagar. Over one lakh vehicles ply on this road daily.

But in just a fortnight’s time, bones and wheels can take it easy. Chakradharpur railway division has started the repair work to make bumps disappear.

Confirming this, senior divisional engineer (co-ordination) K.N. Ghosh, who is supervising the task, South Eastern Railway (SER) had sanctioned requisite funds for re-construction of the 500 metres stretch of the road.

A Chakradharpur railway division spokesperson said nearly Rs 80 lakh would be spent to relay the road.

“Henceforth, the railway’s Openline Organisation will look after its maintenance,” said spokesperson K.N. Biswas, senior divisional commercial manager, Chakradharpur division.

Ghosh, who said the revamp would ensure the road would withstand heavy daily load without cracking up, elaborated on construction specifics.

“It will be a bitumen mastic road, which makes it tough, smooth and impervious to moisture absorption. The roadwork will take another two weeks to finish. Relaying is carried out after midnight when traffic is thin,” Ghosh told The Telegraph.

Chhotanagpur Passenger Association welcomed the repair work.

“The ordeal of passengers, especially patients, will will over once the overbridge road is repaired,” said a senior functionary of the outfit. “But the railways should also ensure the road is made free of encroachers,” he added.
