Boost for Assam tourism

Guwahati, Nov. 28: Union minister for tourism Chiranjeevi today promised Assam a “mega infrastructure development circuit” involving all 20 wildlife sanctuaries of the state along with Kaziranga and Manas — both World Heritage Sites.

Government sources said Assam minister for tourism Chandan Brahma and senior officials of the department, including Assam Tourism Development Corporation additional general manager Bhaskar Barua and adviser Hem Gogoi, attended the meeting held at Transport Bhawan in New Delhi.

Cheeranjeevi, while praising ATDC’s river cruise on the Brahmaputra, said seven countries would be invited to the International Tourism Mart being held in Guwahati from January 18 and 20. All state tourism ministers from across the country would also be invited.

Sources said on being told that Assam tourism department was facing a cash crunch, impacting its efforts to advertise the state’s tourism potential, Cheeranjeevi said Assam would be given a special financial package to promote the industry. He also promised to make all efforts to include Assam in the film tourism circuit, the sources added.
