Syria raid ‘kills kids’

Amman, Nov. 26 (Reuters): A Syrian government air strike on a rebel-held village near Damascus killed 10 children yesterday as they played outdoors, Opposition activists said.

The children went out after a lull in fighting in Deir al-Asafir, a village 12km east of Damascus, when fighter jets struck, activists said.

Video footage taken by activists showed the bodies of two young girls, one wearing purple, the other red, on the street in the village, with wounds to their neck and head.

Barak quits

Jerusalem (Reuters): Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak said in a surprise announcement on Monday that he would quit political life after the January 22 national election.

Beijing (PTI): The landing of a fighter jet on China’s first-ever aircraft carrier ended on a sad note as a key official involved in developing the aircraft, General Manager Luo Yang, died of a heart attack.

Germany fire

Berlin (AP): A fire at a workshop for disabled people in Germany has killed 14, according to firefighters. They said there was no information on why the building near Freiburg, caught fire on Monday.
