Fujairah: Grandmasters Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Sandipan Chanda settled for a quick draw and shared first place along with Alexander Moiseenko of Ukraine in the Fujairah International open chess tournament that concluded here.
The duo had no reason to look for more as a tie for the first place was almost assured with the drawn result in their mutual game.
There was an added incentive for Ganguly after the ties were resolved as he had the best tie-break score among three players tied for the top slot. Sandipan finished third overall after a bad start and was also visibly pleased with his excellent results that included victories over the top two seeds — Baadur Jobava of Georgia and Liem Le Quang of Vietnam.

Calcutta Brijesh Damani, India’s No. 2 in snooker, is upbeat about his prospects at the World Snooker Championship that gets underway, on Saturday, in Sofia. “I came second in the selection trials, winning nine out of 10 matches there. I fell short of the top guy only by a whisker.
“I normally do well in ranking tournaments, which is my USP. Besides, the experience of having featured in previous world championships and winning medals in the Asian championship boosts me further,” he said before his departure on Thursday.
Calcutta: PepsiCo. became the new title sponsors of the IPL with a whopping winning bid of Rs 396.8 crores for the next five seasons, starting 2013. Their bid is double of the Rs 200 crore paid by DLF in the first five seasons of the IPL. Meanwhile, the IPL-VI players’ auction will be held in January next year. According to sources, the auction is likely to take place either on January 12 in Chennai or eight days later in the city.

Calcutta: St. Xavier's College won the Calcutta leg of Red Bull Campus Cricket title, defeating Prafulla Chandra College by eight wickets in the final at the FC ground in Salt Lake, on Wednesday. Batting first Prafulla Chandra managed only 92 in 20 overs. In reply, St. Xavier’s overhauled the target in 15.2 overs at the loss of two wickets. Avishek Das Gupta and Avirup Gupta hit an unbeaten 39 and 30 respectively to take St. Xavier’s home.
