Mumbai’s run fest

Mumbai: All-rounder Abhishek Nayar scored the third century of the Mumbai innings as the hosts notched up a massive 570 against a lacklustre Railways bowling attack on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Group A tie here on Saturday.

In reply, Railways were 86 for two at stumps.

Nayar, coming in to bat following Sachin Tendulkar’s dismissal, scored 107 off 164 deliveries with 10 boundaries and two sixes in his knock.

He had survived a chance, though, at 86, when wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat dropped a sharp chance off India discard Murali Kartik's bowling.

The 29-year old hit a straight six off the same bowler later to reach his eighth first-class hundred. Ajinkya Rahane, resuming on 105, added 24 more before seamer Krishna Kant Upadhyay trapped him leg before.

In pursuit of 570, Railways lost both their openers Shivakant Shukla and Amit Paunikar who couldn't cash in on the dropped catches by Kaustubh Pawar at first slip.

At the Nehru Stadium, in Guwahati, captain Dheeraj Jadhav scored a double century to help Assam pile up 450 against Tripura.

Jadhav, playing in his fourth season for Assam, resumed at overnight 127 to amass 243 — the fourth double hundred of his first class career — sharing a 213-run sixth wicket partnership with Syed Mohammed.

Jadhav’s 462-ball innings was laced with 28 hits to the ropes and a towering six before Tushar Saha struck to have him caught at mid-on. Syed Mohammad (89) too played his part by giving a vital stand before he being adjudged leg before with Saha again being the wicket-taker.
