2 hurt in Dhubri clashes

Dhubri, Oct. 25: Two persons were injured when two groups clashed on IG Road and Ghosepara area in separate incidents here this evening.

Police had to fire several rounds in the air to disperse the mob. Dhubri sub-divisional officer (civil), R. Malakar said the situation was tense in some pockets but was under control.

Some eateries on the bank of the Brahmaputra at Jogomaya ghat in Dhubri town were also set ablaze around 9pm today. Fire-tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flames but three eateries were reduced to ashes.

Police sources said the Dhubri district magistrate had re-imposed curfew with immediate effect for an indefinite period following the clashes.

On the other hand, commercial establishments in Gauripur town of Dhubri district remained closed in protest against the boatmen who did not turn up yesterday to ferry idols during immersion.

In a meeting held today at Gauripur, presided over by former chairman of Gauripur town committee Binoy Kumar Dutta, the district administration was given 48 hours to take action against the boatmen.
