Durga Puja peaceful in Tripura

Agartala, Oct. 25: Three persons died and a journalist was assaulted by goons during the four-day Durga Puja festival in the state which otherwise went off smoothly.

Apart from these incidents, TSR paramillitary personnel recovered some country-made guns.

In an accident on October 22, Rohit Paul, 23, of Jogendra Nagar, died after his bike was hit by a truck from behind. The mishap occurred at Fire Brigade Chowmuhuni around 11.30am. Paul died on spot after he fell off his two-wheeler. The driver of the truck, Amar Chhetri, has been arrested.

In another incident on October 23, an elderly man, Bikram Bahadur, was hacked to death in remote Sitarampara around 1pmunder Ampi police station of Gomati district.

The officer-in-charge of Ampi police station, Gautam Debbarma, said Bahadur, 65, had gone to collect firewood in the jungle. “We are yet to find a clue to the murder but we hope to arrest the culprits soon,” said Debbarma.

The SP (North) Bijay Nag said, “Around 8am, an overloaded autorickshaw, only 5km ahead of Kumarghat, collided with a bus and skidded off the roads into a ditch with all the passengers. People rushed to the spot and dragged the trapped passengers out of the vehicle. Driver Sudip Nath, 23, died on the spot.”

Among the six injured passengers taken to Kumarghat hospital, Sudhangshu Ranjan Das, 5, was declared “brought dead”. Nag said lack of control of traffic department over autorickshaws and other vehicles was causing the accidents.

In another incident, Subrata Ghosh, chief reporter of, a news website, was physically assaulted and injured by a group of unruly Congressmen disrupting normal life in Aralia area south of Agartala after the immersion ceremony yesterday. Ghosh was assaulted while trying to save his cousin. Interestingly, after reaching East Agartala police station to file a complaint, Ghosh came to know that the assailants had already filed a false complaint against him.
