Colombo: Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not looking too far ahead. He wants to take it match by match and doesn’t wish to talk about winning the World T20 title right now.
“Wining the World T20 is a far off thing at present since the priority is to win the next match (versus South Africa) and qualify for the semis. We don’t wish to think too far and want to concentrate on the present.
“Then it will be lottery cricket in the knockouts
If someone excels with the bat, then it’s your day,” Dhoni said.
The uncertainty over the team’s plans and the playing XI is also because of the various permutations and combinations involved in the group.
“We can’t make plans right away as a lot of things will depend on the result of the earlier (Australia vs Pakistan) match. May be we will have some plans but then we might not need that plan at all. So it’s not right to plan right now but wait and watch
“Our combination always depends on the kind of wicket we get.
“Like it will be very difficult for me to say what will be our strategy
Also, we have the liberty of watching how the wicket behaves during first match and that certainly has an impact on our team selection for the next game.
“We’ll play the last match of Super Eights
Could be the last match for us too. We’ll see the situation and then decide
“It’s a big tricky
May be we will have to win by a certain margin. The playing XI will also depend on the wicket
” Dhoni explained.
Whatever the circumstances, Dhoni is aware of South Africans’ strengths. The Team India captain feels they are not “clicking as a unit and that has been their problem.”
“They have a complete side with two good fast bowlers, Jacques Kallis and two spinners.
“They have batsmen like AB (De Villiers), Hashim Amla and (JP) Duminy who can score quick runs. But then in this format, you need to click as a team.
“You need one guy to score 50 and a lot of other guys need to play those little 15/20 run innings
“Unless, you have a Chris Gayle in your side who can alone make the difference that shifts the momentum in your favour
“South Africa are a very good side
They have the talent and the balance.”
