Insider hint in kidnap and rob

Police suspect that members of the gang that abducted homemaker Rupali Dingal and took cash and jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh from her Garia home on Saturday were known to her.

The 30-year-old was alone in the house when the gang raided it. In a note left in the house, the robbers threatened her father-in-law Bhairav Dingal, a land broker, that his wife Angurbala would be kidnapped and Rupali killed if he went to the police.

Bhairav’s son, Biplab, who runs a computer-training centre at Gosaba, and Rupali are married for five years.

“The area is congested and it is unlikely that a woman was taken away forcibly without anyone noticing. Neighbours would have heard a scuffle if Rupali was abducted,” said a police officer.

“Moreover, from the handwriting it does not appear the note was written hurriedly,” added the officer.

According to the cops, the robbers had opened the lock on the collapsible gate from outside.

“We are speaking to the family for clues,” said the additional superintendent of police (east), South 24-Parganas, K.P. Barui.

A piece of black cloth that might have been used as a veil was found in the house. There was also a footprint on a chair, apparently of a woman.

“They left behind Rupali’s mobile phone but took away the two SIM cards from the phone,” Bhairav said on Sunday. “We did not receive any ransom call,” he added.
