Truck runs over woman

A 45-year-old woman was killed when a speeding truck, which was trying to overtake another heavy vehicle, ran over near Hathi-Ghora Temple on Sakchi-Mango Road on Friday afternoon.

Sources said Chandrawati Devi was riding pillion on her husband Aswini Kumar Singh’s bike. The couple was on their way to Awadh Dental College at Bhilaipahari when the accident took place around 12.20pm, 10 minutes before the no-entry rule for heavy vehicles comes into force in the city.

The driver of the truck managed to flee with his vehicle, which was later found abandoned a little distance away. Sakchi police have recovered the mangled body of the woman and sent it for post-mortem.

Aswini, who managed to escape with minor bruises on his left hand, is in a state of shock. The police took him to MGM Medical College and Hospital for a check-up.

According to eyewitnesses, the killer truck, which was headed towards Mango, was trying to chase another heavy vehicle. “The couple on the bike was also on their way to Mango. As one of the trucks whizzed past, the man got nervous and lost control of his bike and both fell down. While the rider fell on the left, the woman fell on the right and was crushed under the wheels of the second truck that came hurtling down,” an eyewitness said.

Sakchi inspector Bhola Prasad Singh, who later arrived at the spot, said the truck had been seized.

“The driver is absconding. We are on the lookout for him. The mishap took place 10-minutes before no-entry regulations for heavy vehicles came into force. We have not been able to find out whether the bike was also speeding,” Singh said.
