Youths held for lewd remarks

Two youths were arrested for allegedly passing lewd comments at a couple of school students at a busy market in central Calcutta on Thursday morning.

The accused — Dipankar Roy, 25, and Pintu Das, 26 — could be arrested because of the intervention of bystanders and shopowners on Colootollah Lane in Bowbazar. Both youths work at a shop in the locality, said the police.

The two girls, both Class VIII students at Bhagabati Vidyalaya, were returning home after school with their mothers when a youth passed lewd comments at them, said an officer of Bowbazar police station. Soon, another youth joined the first one and made more lewd remarks.

As the girls and their mothers started shouting, some residents gathered on the spot and demanded an apology from the youths.

“When the youths didn’t apologise, Bowbazar police station was alerted,” said a witness. When the cops arrived, the bystanders handed them over. “The youths were booked for outraging the modesty of women through lewd remarks and gestures,” said an officer.

nLand fraud: Two men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly selling a three-bigha plot to a New Alipore-based trader for Rs 75 lakh with a forged deed. “Mohammad Ali Mollah and Kamruzamman Mistri have been arrested for cheating Niranjan Lal Agarwal,” said joint commissioner of police (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh. Agarwal recently found out that the land belonged to someone else and lodged a complaint.
