Teen chooses dupatta noose

A Class XI student of a Ranchi school hanged herself from the ceiling of her home around noon on Monday.

Though Shristi Kumari (18), a resident of house No. 12 on Sharma Road in Dhurwa, has left behind a suicide note, it is unclear what exactly spurred her death wish.

“In the note, she only apologised to her parents and brothers for committing suicide. She didn’t say what made her take such an extreme step,” an officer at Dhurwa police station said.

According to police, Shristi was supposed to appear for an internal examination at her Tender Heart School on Tuesday and had taken leave from school to prepare.

But instead of studying, she turned her dupatta into a noose while her parents were not at home. Father S.K. Prasad — the teacher of a government school — was at work in Mandar, while her mother was in the market.

Prasad told police that his daughter was good in studies and had never complained of any other issue plaguing her.

“So, we cannot exactly say that the girl committed suicide because of exam pressure. However, there must have been some problem, which she did not share with her parents,” the Dhurwa police officer said, adding that they would probe the matter.

In another incident of suicide, a 30-year-old mother of three also chose the noose over life following a tiff with her husband. Rekha Devi, a resident of Tanki Side in Dhurwa, killed herself in the small hours of Monday.

According to police, Rekha was chiding one of her children for making mischief on Sunday when her husband Surendra Kumar intervened. “He slapped her in front of her children. The humiliation may have prompted her to hang herself after everyone went to sleep,” a policeman said.
