Woman held after shoot-out

A woman was arrested after a shoot-out between police and goons in Khardah on Sunday.

The police raided the gang’s hideout on the banks of the Hooghly and fired four rounds after the goons started firing indiscriminately.

“We had information that some goons had assembled in the house. As policemen cordoned off the house, they heard gunshots from inside. The officers retaliated,” said Kalyan Mukherjee, deputy commissioner of police, detective department, Barrackpore commissionerate.

The owner of the house, Asma Bibi, was arrested and a firearm and two rounds of cartridge were seized from her. The goons managed to flee.

Murder over TV: A 25-year-old man was killed in Rajarhat

on Saturday after a quarrel with friends over which TV programme they would see. Sabir Ali Mollah was watching TV with three friends in a shop when Ali Rezzak hit him on the head after a disagreement over switching of channels. Sabir was taken to a nursing home, where he was declared dead. The friends are on the run.

Patient missing: A patient has gone missing from Beleghata ID Hospital. Rajani Halder’s family lodged a missing diary on Sunday. Hospital employees allegedly told the family members, who went to visit him on Sunday and found his bed empty, that they had not seen Halder for the last two days.

Baby found: A newborn was found abandoned at construction site in Missionbazar, Kestopur, on Sunday. The girl’s cries alerted local residents, who found her wrapped in a towel inside a plastic bag and alerted police. The baby was admitted to a nursing home and will be handed over to a home for children.

Factory blaze: A fire broke out in a plastic godown in Belgachhia Milk Colony at 7.35pm on Sunday. Five tenders doused the flames within 30 minutes.

Puja trains: Eastern Railway will run nine pairs of special trains between Howrah and Guwahati, Kamakhya and Calcutta and Digha and Alipurduar to meet passenger rush during Puja. It had earlier announced 64 Puja-special trains from the city and Asansol.
