Abhiruchi Day observed

Guwahati, Sept. 3: Khokho Coaching Centre, Sarusajai and Gurukul Grammar Senior Secondary School emerged the best teams in the mass jogging of the 29th Abhiruchi Sports Day central programme observed here today.

Purnoday Sangha followed Khokho Centre and Guwahati Young Star Football Coaching Centre teams in the clubs and coaching centres category of the run.

In the educational institutions’ category, where five schools participated, Sudarshan Public School, Anand Academy, Netaji Vidyapith Railway Higher Secondary School and Ulubari Higher Secondary School finished second to fifth respectively.

The mass jogging was flagged off from Chandmari Flyover to Nehru Stadium by Arjuna awardee Olympian Jayanta Talukdar in the presence of Arjuna awardee Bhogeswar Barua.

The day marks Barua’s birthday. Former ministers Kamala Kanta Kalita and Biraj Sarmah were also present during the ceremony.

In the inter-school dance competition, Gurukul Grammar School, TC Girls’ Higher Secondary School and Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Silpukhuri emerged the top three teams respectively while Sudarshan School were awarded the consolation prize.

Sudarshan School bagged the first prize in the physical training competition followed by Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Rajgarh and Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Kalipur, teams in the second and third places respectively.

Altogether 32 sportspersons, including Talukdar and Olympic pugilist Shiva Thapa and three promising youngsters, were honoured for their achievements in the international arena.

Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority chairman Robin Bordoloi and parliamentary secretary Rekibuddin Ahmed were present during the awards ceremony held at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here. The day was observed in the districts, subdivision and block levels in different parts of the state.
