Baby death protest

Durgapur, Aug. 26: Relatives of a newborn today ransacked the emergency ward of the Durgapur Steel Plant hospital alleging that a nurse had dropped the baby after delivery, leading to its death.

Lily Sharma, 32, who had given birth to a boy on August 22, said the hospital authorities tried to cover up the incident by saying the baby died of “cardiac disorder”.

“I was not allow me to see my baby despite requests. They said they had kept him in the neonatal care unit as he was born with cardiac disorder. But I saw the baby falling off the nurse’s lap. Today, I learnt he has died,” she said.

Around 15 to 20 relatives and neighbours from Waria near Durgapur broke the windowpanes and furniture of the emergency ward at the SAIL-run hospital.

Lily’s husband Pawan also alleged the baby died after falling off the nurse’s lap.

Hospital director Omesh Khurana said the allegation against the nurse was baseless.
