Wellington: New Zealand’s talismanic spinner Daniel Vettori has been ruled out of their upcoming tour of India due to a groin injury. He has been replaced by off-spinner Jeetan Patel in the 15-man Test squad, announced on Tuesday.
New Zealand, who will be lead by Ross Taylor, play a two-Test series against India, starting on August 23.
“Unfortunately Daniel Vettori won’t recover in time for the Test series but his injury has created an opportunity for Jeetan Patel to come back into the side. Jeetan has been in great form for Warwickshire and deserves his opportunity,” national selection manager Kim Littlejohn said.
All-rounder James Franklin has been included in the squad in place of off-colour batsman Dean Brownlie. “He brings a lot of experience and knowledge of playing in Indian conditions,” said Littlejohn.
Brownlie averaged just 15.75 as New Zealand lost 0-2 in the recently concluded Test series against the West Indies.
