Vehicle thief, aides arrested

May 15: Anowar Hussain, alias Boga, a criminal wanted in at least 25 vehicle theft cases in the city and parts of the state was arrested by police today at Palashbari in Kamrup district.

Boga, along with one of his aides, Jobed Khan, both in their mid-twenties, were arrested from their houses last night in connection with the theft of a motorcycle from Palashbari on May 8.

Police said Boga was arrested from his house at Bijaynagar following investigation into the case 87/2012 registered in connection with the lifting of a motorcycle on May 8. Khan was later arrested from Boko for his alleged involvement in the crime.

The police seized a pistol from Hussain.

Sources at Palashbari police station said Boga was arrested in 2009 and 2010 for stealing cars.

“Boga is a known criminal who leads a team of vehicle-lifters not only in Guwahati but also across the state. His aides lift cars and motorcycles from the streets of Guwahati and send them to other parts for illegal sale. According to investigation, he maintains links with gangs of inter-state vehicle-lifters in Dimapur, Imphal, Shillong and West Bengal. He was arrested twice in Palashbari and once in Guwahati in connection with vehicle-theft cases but was out on bail,” a police officer said.

Boga has been booked under Section 376 IPC for vehicle theft and Section 25 (1) A of the Arms Act for possession of arms. Both were produced in the court of Kamrup chief judicial magistrate and the court remanded the duo to three-day police custody for interrogation.

“Since he is a hardcore criminal extracting details from him is difficult. But we have information that he is wanted in several cases of vehicle lifting pending in police stations across the state. We have sent a communiqué to all police stations to enquire about the cases pending against him. We suspect that apart from vehicle theft, he is involved in robbery and murder cases but we are trying to divulge details from him. We have got information that he is wanted in a case in Kokrajhar, too,” the police officer said.
