John relief

New Delhi, May 7: Bombay High Court on Monday upheld the 15-day jail term handed to John Abraham for rash driving and injuring two persons in 2006, but released him under the Probation of Offenders Act.

He has been asked to pay a bond of Rs 10,000. He will also have to pay Rs 10,000 each to one victim and the family of another, who died of an illness two years later.

Singhvi plea

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has dismissed a plea that sought directions to make Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi a witness in a case against Anna Hazare for allegedly instigating public against the state. A lower court had earlier dropped Singhvi’s name saying it was included for “sensationalising” the case.

Smoke ban

Srinagar (PTI): Post offices in Kashmir, all branches of Jammu and Kashmir Bank and the campus of Kashmir University have been declared “smoke-free” zones, officials have said.

UAE suicide

Dubai (PTI): A 61-year-old Indian X-ray technician, who ran awareness campaigns against suicide in the UAE, has allegedly hanged himself. The body of Sugathan, from Kerala, was found in an under construction building in Fujairah last Monday. The 61-year-old campaigner was awarded for social service by the Indian community last year.

Smut cop

Panaji (PTI): An India Reserve Battalion constable, booked for shooting and circulating an obscene video of his woman colleague, has been suspended. An inquiry has been initiated, police said on Monday. Abdul Kadar Chandsahab, who has not been arrested yet, has moved a local court for anticipatory bail.

ITBP post

New Delhi (PTI): Mahboob Alam has been appointed the additional director-general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). A 1981-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer, Alam had been serving as the inspector-general of the Rapid Action Force in the capital.
