Additional flight to Bagdogra

Air India will operate an additional flight to Bagdogra from the city every Friday from May 4 to June 15 to meet passenger rush during summer holidays. This will be in addition to the existing four-days-a-week Airbus service to Bagdogra. The flight will take off from Calcutta at 1pm and reach Bagdogra at 2pm every Friday. The return flight will leave Bagdogra at 2.40pm and reach the city at 3.35pm. ir India will also fly more frequently to Myanmar. The airline will operate a second weekly direct flight on Fridays on the Calcutta-Yangon-Calcutta sector from May. The airline currently operates a flight to Yangon on Mondays.

Suicide on tracks

An unidentified man jumped to his death on the Metro tracks on Monday afternoon at Girish Park station just as a Dum Dum-bound train was entering. Truncated services were operated between Maidan and Kavi Subhas stations for an hour from 5pm.

Metro trains

Metro Railway will run 205 trains on Tuesday instead of 270 that run on weekdays. There will be no change in the duration of services though the frequency will be less.

Power supply

Power supply to the Sakherbazar, Biren Roy Road, Santosh Roy Road, Barisha, Sarsuna Housing, Putiary and Sakuntala Park areas may be disrupted on Wednesday and Thursday because of maintenance.

Fatal fall

A 72-year-old resident of an apartment on Southern Avenue died on Monday after he fell down from the roof of the building. Police said Sudhir Chandra Lodh, 72, who lived on the second floor of Pancha Deep apartment, was checking the water tank on the roof when he slipped and fell down on the premises of the adjacent building. He was declared dead at Peerless Hospital.


Seven persons were injured after a train compartment that was being repaired at the Chitpur rail yard fell on them on Monday afternoon. The coach was being lifted from the ground by a crane when another railway engine hit it from behind. The rake fell on the men repairing it, injuring them. They were admitted to hospital.


A fire broke out on the ground floor of a building on Council House Street on Monday morning. It started from an AC machine around 9am. Two tenders doused the flames. nother fire broke out in a sari shop on Theatre Road around 8.30pm on Monday. Five tenders brought the fire under control within two hours. The cause of the blaze is not known yet.

Duo held

Two men were arrested from Liluah in Howrah on Monday afternoon for allegedly introducing impurities in silver bars. Nilap Singha, 30, and Yuvraj Dighai, 25, were picked up from a factory on Notunpara Road and 120kg of silver and 20kg of copper were recovered from the factory. Police said Dighai, who owned the factory, used to sell silver bars in Burrabazar.


More than 500 residents of Rajapur blocked the Uluberia-Amta Road on Monday, demanding demolition of liquor dens in the locality. The residents alleged they had complained against the liquor dens several times but no action was taken. The roadblock continued for three hours before senior police officials reached the spot and persuaded the residents to lift the blockade.
