Theft in flat

Cash and jewellery worth more than Rs 7 lakh were stolen from a locked ground-floor flat at Eastern Park in Baghajatin on Wednesday. Police said Sanjay Shaw, 30, the tenant of the flat, had been in a private hospital in New Alipore since Tuesday to look after his wife Shivani, who had suffered an accident. When Sanjay returned on Wednesday, he found the locks broken and the entire house ransacked. He said jewellery worth Rs 6.5 lakh, Rs 20,000 and a laptop were stolen.

Students ill

Around 100 students at Netra High Madrasa in Diamond Harbour fell ill after taking iron tablets, which were provided to them by district health workers on Wednesday morning. School officials said the students complained of headache, stomach pain and vomiting an hour after taking the pills. They were rushed to hospital.

Train halt

The Kolkata-Jammu Tawi Express, Kolkata-Delhi Lalquila Express, Sealdah-New Coochbehar Uttarbanga Express, Sealdah-Alipurduar Kanchankanya Express, Sealdah-Varanasi express and the Varanasi-Sealdah Express will stop at Belghoria station on April 20, 21 and 22. The trains will be diverted through the Naihati-Bandel route instead of Dankuni on these days because of maintenance work at Dankuni.

Drug arrest

Ashraf Ali, alias Mokka, who was wanted in several cases of extortion, kidnapping and burglary on the northern fringes of the city, was arrested from Lake Town on Wednesday with 24kg of ganja. Police acted on a tip-off and arrested Ali from Tentultala in Lake Town, where he allegedly came for a drug deal.


Train services in the Sealdah main division were hit for nearly 90 minutes on Wednesday evening after a group of passengers blocked the tracks at Barrackpore station. The passengers were protesting lack of security after being assaulted by a group of youths, with whom they had an argument at Titagarh, the previous station. The passengers also damaged furniture at the Barrackpore GRP office. A police team managed to lift the blockade at 9pm.

Labourer dead

A labourer at the construction site of the airport’s new terminal died on Wednesday after being run over by a dumper truck. Harun Mahaldar, 49, was carrying building materials on his head when the accident occurred. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Labourers staged an agitation demanding the driver’s arrest. Police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee.


Brothers Prabhunath Chaudhury, 45, and Ramlal Chaudhury, 48, who were returning home with a family member in an ambulance, died after a truck hit the ambulance near Serampore in Hooghly on Wednesday.
