Trader drugged & robbed

Two youths allegedly drugged a city trader and his niece and stole their belongings in Hooghly’s Chinsurah on Monday afternoon. Nirmal Singha, 60, and Dipali Singha, 42, who had gone to Chinsurah to meet a client the youths had told them about, were found unconscious beside the Hooghly. n officer of Chinsurah police station said more than Rs 10,000 in cash and jewellery were stolen from the duo. irmal owns a car equipment shop in Mullickbazar and also deals in land, houses and cars. The youths — identified as Bachha and Swapan — apparently told the trader that a Chinsurah resident wanted to sell a car and a house. e went to Chinsurah on Monday and took along his niece as she knows about cars. “The youths made them wait at the Chinsurah launch ghat for a long time. When Dipali felt thirsty, they brought her a bottle of water,” said the officer. According to the complaint, the duo passed out after drinking the water.

Fire scare

A fire broke out at the ground-floor meter box of the United Bank of India’s Deshapriya Park branch on Tuesday afternoon, causing panic. The bank officials evacuated the premises and called the fire brigade, which doused the flames in 15 minutes. nother fire was reported around 12.15pm on the ground floor of a five-storeyed building on Prince Anwar Shah Road. It was doused in 30 minutes.

Hunger strike

A section of officials at Calcutta airport started a relay hunger strike from Tuesday evening demanding perquisites and facilities on a par with other employees. Two members of the International Airports Authority of India Officers’ Association started the strike at the airport.


Trouble broke out on a field near the Bird Jute Mill at Golaghata in Lake Town after 12 officials of the refugee and rehabilitation department went to take possession of the land, claiming it belonged to the department. Hundreds of residents resisted them, leading to a scuffle in which several people from either side were injured.


Two persons were injured in as many accidents in the city on Tuesday. Around 10am, 42-year-old pedestrian Sanjay Agarwal was hit by a motorcycle on CR Avenue near Jorasanko. He was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury. An hour earlier, Pramit Dutta, 21, was hit by an unidentified vehicle while riding his motorcycle near Deshapriya Park. He suffered a fracture in his leg.


A mason died of electrocution at a building under construction in Gariahat on Monday night. Deepak Gupta, 27, had entered the building at 10pm when he stepped on some electrical wires. He was declared dead in hospital.
