Mishap on NH-5 kills five

Jajpur, March 13: They were returning home after attending a marriage function. But little did they know that the happy journey would turn into a fatal one.

Five persons were killed as a Scorpio and a truck collided head-on near Rathia village in the Dharmasala police station limits on NH-5 early today.

The deceased persons included, the driver of the Scorpio, Pipala Bahala. The others were identified as Bhagyadhar Majhi ,25, Akshaya Majhi, 29, Swapneswar Dehury, 27, Bhajamana Dehury, 28 and Bhagirathi Pradhan, 19, all of them of Khajiramunda in the Chhendipada police limits in Angul district.

Police said they were returning home after attending a marriage reception in Bhadrak when the incident occurred. A local truck suddenly came from the wrong side of the NH-5 and collided with the vehicle, killing two on the spot. Later, two out of the four of the seriously injured were declared brought dead at the nearby hospital .

Two others were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after their condition deteriorated. While one of them succumbed to his injuries on way to Cuttack, the other one is battling for life at the hospital.

“The Scorpio was moving along the left side of the road and the truck was coming towards it along the same lane. That’s why both the vehicles collided,” said inspector in charge of Dharmasala police station Suvendu Kumar Sinha. The driver and helper of the truck fled from the spot. The police have seized both the vehicles.
