Ulfa cadre killed in ambush

Dhubri, March 3: An Ulfa cadre was killed in an encounter with police and the army at Thakurvila under Lakhipur police station in Goalpara district last night.

A police team, led by Goalpara additional superintendent of police Sushanta Biswa Sarma, had laid ambush in the area following a tip-off that Ulfa cadre Jiten Rabha, 27, might enter the area where Dadan festival was being held.

“When the Ulfa militant entered Thakurvila, he was signalled to stop and surrender. He challenged the police and the army and fired at them. The forces retaliated and he was killed in the encounter,” a police officer said.

The additional superintendent of police said Jiten had surrendered earlier and was staying at the Ulfa designated camp at Khardang. However, he hardly stayed there 10 days and has remained untraced since December last year.

“After deserting the camp, Jiten resorted to extortion, kidnapping and killing. Last night, he had come for a similar purpose but the police had prior information and put up nakas on various routes leading to Thakurvila,” Sarma said.

A 7.65 pistol, four rounds of live ammunition, empty cartridges and a motorbike have been recoeverd from the place of the encounter, a police source said.

In another incident, a camp of the Garo National Liberation Army was jointly busted by Meghalaya police and the CRPF at Arenda (on the Assam-Meghalaya border) under Mendipathar police station in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya in the wee hours yesterday. A gunbattle took place for over half-an-hour but the militants managed to flee. A pistol, 100 detonators and GNLA’s writing pads and documents were recovered from the camp, a police source in Mendipathar said.
