Ganja seized

Feb. 15: Customs officials seized 103.5kg ganja valued at Rs 5,17,500 from an unclaimed baggage in the parcel yard of Guwahati railway station last evening. The consignment was to be delivered in Delhi, officials said.

Road safety

The transport enforcement team on Wednesday conducted a road safety drive at Christianbasti, where the riders who were wearing half helmets without an ISI mark, were fined on the grounds of violating the Motor Vehicles Act. The officials seized more than 400 half helmets and collected Rs 86,000 as fine. The drive will continue till February 29.

Leopard dies

A two-year-old female leopard cat was run over by a train near Bamunimaidam on Wednesday morning. The carcass was later sent to the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden.

Shop gutted

Guwahati: A garments shop, New Shree Guru Bastralaya, on SS Road (opposite New Market) in Fancy Bazar was partially damaged in a fire that broke out around 9.40pm on Wednesday. An electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.

Market sealed

Officials of the Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offences of Assam police on Wedn-esday sealed eight rooms on the second floor of Kay M. Plaza, a market complex at Ganeshguri. The owner of the complex, Pranab Jyoti Barman, is allegedly the main accused in the Unipay2U scam. Barman was produced in court on Wednesday and rema-nded in judicial custody.

Legal action

Guwahati: A group of aspiring school teachers which has cleared TET, is set to take legal recou-rse against an advertisement seeking application for teachers’ posts. The aspirants alleged that the government has imposed new conditions in the advertisement.

Body found

Police broke open the door of a room in Hotel Blue Diamond at Panbazar and recovered the body of Apurba Jeet Bayan, 46, on Wednesday morning. The victim, from Barpeta, allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan.
