Film in piracy net

Sreelekha Mitra and Jaya Seal Ghosh in a still from Katakuti

The director and producer of Katakuti have complained to police that the film, released on December 2, has been made available on the Internet for illegal download.

The film, which had a four-week run in city theatres, was uploaded on It was blocked after producer Sudipto Roy Chowdhury filed an FIR with Kasba police.

The satellite rights of the film are yet to be sold and a free run on the Net could mean huge losses. “Katakuti was made on a budget of Rs 1.5 crore. Though we can still sell the satellite rights, we will not be able to release a DVD and the loss may amount to more than Rs 80 lakh,” first-time film-maker Premanshu Roy said.

Roy learnt about the rip-off from a friend on Tuesday morning. “I immediately got in touch with my producer. It’s a mystery… whoever uploaded the film must have had the DVD. We have sold the film to Databazaar Media for overseas release but neither Databazaar nor our producer would leak the film.”

“We have received a complaint that someone had uploaded the entire film on,” said a senior officer of the detective department. A case has been initiated under the copyright act.

Sreelekha Mitra, who played a playwright in the relationship tale, was shocked when Metro told her about the piracy. “This is our producer’s first film and if such incidents take place, I don’t think he would want to invest in another film. Such incidents are detrimental to our industry.”

“I am not sure how the film got leaked. I think the post-production studios should be more careful,” the producer said.
