Youths held with hashish

Siliguri, Dec. 14: The directorate of revenue intelligence arrested two Calcutta youths and recovered from them hashish worth Rs 1 crore at Panitanki on the Indo-Nepal border today.

Sheikh Sabir and Parvez Alam, residents of Babubazar under Ekbalpur police station in Calcutta, were allegedly carrying the contraband from Kathmandu to Calcutta. A DRI official said the duo were carrying 20kg of hashish and 1kg fetched Rs 5 lakh in the international market. The youths were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and were remanded in jail custody for 14 days by the NDPS court here.

Sports meet

Siliguri: The annual sports meet for the physically and mentally challenged children in north Bengal will be held at Kanchenjungha Stadium here on December 18. Organisers of the meet titled Muskan said a rally would be flagged off by north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb on December 17 ahead of the event.


Cooch Behar: Vijay Merchant Trophy, a cricket tournament for the Under-16, was kicked off at the Rajbari Stadium here on Wednesday. Bengal took on Tripura on the inaugural day of the event that is organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal.

Three hurt

Jaigaon: Three members of a family were injured when a branch of a tree fell on their home at Luksan in Nagrakata block on Wednesday. Pravin Lama, the block development officer of Nagrakata, said the trio had suffered injuries when the tin roof of the house had collapsed. While one persons has been admitted to Malbazar subdivisional hospital, the other two are being treated at Sulkapara block health centre.

Poster threat

Jaigaon: A poster that threatens four businessmen was found stuck up on a bridge at Rangalibazna in Madarihat block on Wednesday morning. The poster warned the four traders that they would be beheaded if they did not walk out of the Congress.
