Bhubaneswar, Oct. 1: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today launched e-scholarship scheme Prerana for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, backward classes and minority sections to take up higher studies. Nearly 2 lakh students will avail the post-matriculation scholarships online. The scholarship will be directly transferred to the student’s account.
Launching the scheme, Naveen said: “Students from weaker sections will be benefited. Transparency and efficiency will be maintained throughout the system.”
SC and ST Development secretary Santosh Sarangi said: “The online system will be hassle free. One can apply for the scholarship online. If students do not have online access from their homes, they can apply for the scholarship through their educational institutions, district welfare officer and National Informatics Centres.”
SC and ST minister Lal Bihari Himrika said: “Earlier, the students had to face a lot of trouble to get the scholarships. They had to run from pillar to post: they scuttled between educational institutions and the state government officials. Now, the students will no longer face such difficulties.”
To get the post-matriculation scholarships, one has to log on to http.nic.in/odishapms and upload information on documents such as caste certificates, photos and income tax returns to avail the benefit.
Swagatam Swain, 24, a student of Benaras Hindu University, said over telephone: “ I can now avail the scholarship here. I don’t’ have to go to the state to avail the scholarship.”
Post-matriculation scholarships are awarded to students pursuing courses at the post-graduation and MPhil level. The scholarship amount varies depending on whether one is pursuing a technical or non-technical course.
For professional courses, hostellers are being given Rs 740 per month, while day scholars are being given scholarships worth Rs 330.
Up to the graduation level, a student can avail a scholarship of Rs 355 (hostel boarder) and Rs 185 (day scholars). Monetary assistance up to the intermediate level varies from Rs 235 to Rs 140.
