Blaze guts shops, huts

A fire gutted 12 shops and 10 huts on Dent Mission Road in Ekbalpore on Tuesday night. The fire originated around 8.30pm in a wheat grinding shop and spread quickly. Eight fire tenders took nearly three hours to douse the flames. Residents alleged that the firemen arrived at least 90 minutes after they were alerted. Fire minister Jawed Ahmed Khan, who visited the spot, said he would punish firemen responsible for the delay.

Cop assault: The assistant commissioner of police (southeastern division), Abu Saleh, called Rajib Saha, the 37-year-old regional head of a pharmaceutical company who was allegedly assaulted and harassed by officers of Lake police station last Friday, to his office on Tuesday. Saha narrated the incident in front of Saleh and deputy commissioner of police, Basab Dasgupta. His statement was recorded.

Trains disrupted: Trains were disrupted on the Sonarpur-Canning section from 6.30am to 8.40am on Tuesday, after residents blocked the tracks between Taldi and Canning stations. A railway official said the residents wanted Chandikhali station, being built between Taldi and Canning, to be shifted closer to their village. Two local trains were cancelled.
