MLA hurt in car accident

Islampur, July 13: Nasiruddin Ahmed, the Trinamul Congress MLA from Kaliganj in Nadia district, and two lawyers were injured when the car they were travelling in collided with another car on the Balurghat-Malda state highway at Pagliganj today.

The MLA and lawyers Asim Guha and Manas Basu Roy and the driver of the vehicle, who was also hurt, have been admitted to the district hospital in Balurghat. Ahmed had come to North Dinajpur to campaign for himself for the West Bengal bar council elections scheduled for July 19. He is one of the 65 candidates contesting the polls. The leader was travelling towards Buniyadpur from Balurghat when the accident took place in Pagliganj, 10km from here. Police said the driver of the other vehicle fled after the accident and both the cars have been seized.

Fake notes

Siliguri: Pradhannagar police arrested Narendra Sutradhar, a resident of Champasari, from Badrijote on Wednesday and recovered fake notes with a face value of Rs 12,700 from him.

Road death

Jalpaiguri: One person died and two others were injured after two motocycles collided with a truck on Jhumur bridge near Dhupguri on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Dipankar Das, 24, and the injured persons, who were riding another motorcycle, have been admitted to the Jalpaiguri district hospital.

Bus strike

Jalpaiguri: The joint action committee of the bus owners’ associations of Jalpaiguri will observe a 24-hour strike in Jalpaiguri on Thursday. Gaurab Chakraborty, the spokesperson for the committee, said vehicles would be off the roads to protest the bad condition of bridges spanning the Teesta and the Jaldhaka and the hike in the price of petroleum products. He said no buses would ply between Jalpaiguri and Siliguri, Haldibari, Dooars and Cooch Behar.

Arms arrest

Malda: Mothabari police arrested a 25-year-old and recovered improvised firearms and cartridges from him on Tuesday. Three guns with five live ammunitions were seized.
