Drop in jumbo number at park
Jorhat: The Kaziranga National Park recorded a decline in the elephant population in the census conducted at the park, recently. Official sources said altogether 1,186 elephants were found in the park recently, against 1,293 found in the census conducted in 2008. “The decline may be because of a few elephants who left the park temporarily as the authorities set fire to large stretches of grassland when the census was on,” a park official said. It is an annual feature at Kaziranga to burn down tall elephant grass to enhance the growth of new vegetation.
Jorhat: A home guard, Naren Gogoi, posted at the armoury of prosecuting inspector’s office on the campus of Golaghat judicial court, was arrested on Saturday night on charges of stealing arms. A 9mm pistol missing from the armoury was found on him.
Jorhat: Mohan Raj of Medelajan under Saphekhati police station of Sivasagar district was killed allegedly by his wife, Namita, with an axe following a quarrel on Saturday night.
Jorhat: Mousami Saikia, a housewife of Hatibaruah Chariali under Lahdoigrah police outpost of Jorhat district, who set herself on fire, died of her injuries at the Assam Medical College and Hospital at Dibrugarh on Sunday.

Guwahati: The All Adivasi Student Association of Assam has demanded a CBI inquiry intothe killing of its president, Bosco Chermaco, in Kokrajhar district in February. A central executive committee meeting of the association held on Saturday elected Peter Minj as the new president.
Barpeta: Moon Boro, 22, and two others were seriously injured when they were electrocuted at Bolia village of Bajali sub-division in Barpeta district on Sunday. The injured were working under the Rajib Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme.
