Youth posing as dy mayor detained

Dhanbad, Dec. 1: Two days after two men masquerading as nephews of Babulal Marandi and an MLA were arrested, the district police today detained a youth for impersonating deputy mayor Niraj Singh.

Rajiv Singh of Manaitand, who tried to extort money from district board engineer Bhagvan Singh, was caught by angry supporters of the deputy mayor and allegedly manhandled before being handed over to the police.

According to sources, the drama started around 1.30pm when Rajiv, pretending to be the deputy mayor, called up Bhagvan Singh and asked for Rs 20,000. The engineer was told that a youth would visit his residence to collect the money.

Accordingly, Rajiv himself reached Bhagvan Singh’s Luby Circular Road house around 2pm.

The engineeer, however, smelt a rat and contacted the mayor’s office. He was told the youth was an impostor. Deputy mayor Niraj Singh asked the engineer to keep the youth occupied till he reached the spot. Bhagvan offered Rajiv tea and engaged him in a conversation.

When Niraj Singh reached the Luby Circular Road residence of the district board engineer, the youth tried to flee but was caught by the deputy mayor’s supporters.

Officer in charge of Sadar police station Parmeshwar Shukla said Rajiv had been detained. “No FIR has been lodged against him so far. We will have to release him if a complaint is not filed soon,” he said.
