Teacher held for abuse

A middle-aged teacher of Bidhannagar Municipal School was arrested on Wednesday after the principal lodged an FIR against him. The principal alleged that history teacher Biswajit Das had harassed and verbally abused a female teacher. Das later said he was thrashed by cops while being taken to Bidhannagar (South) police station. He has been admitted to Bidhannagar State General Hospital. The police said Das was hospitalised after he complained of breathing trouble.


Dense smoke and sparks were spotted near the ground-floor meter box at Mercantile Building on Lalbazar Street, which came under the scanner in the wake of the Stephen Court blaze, on Wednesday afternoon. Two tenders brought the situation under control.

Later in the evening, a plastic factory on South Tangra Road caught fire. Four tenders doused the flames after 30 minutes. Firemen suspect short circuits were responsible for both fires. No was injured in either incident.


Services of Southeastern Railway were disrupted for two hours on Wednesday after a truck rammed into a level crossing at Uluberia and the iron gate fell on the tracks. RPF personnel said the truck hit the level crossing at 5pm as the gate was being lowered.

The truck driver fled. rains were also disrupted between Naihati and Sealdah from 7pm to 9.10pm on Wednesday because of a point failure at Naihati station. Six trains were cancelled and 25 trains were held up at various stations for 30 minutes on an average. The Sealdah-Jogbani Express was diverted via Dankuni.

Drug arrests

Two men were arrested on Wednesday in Budge Budge on the charge of peddling drugs. Police said 800g of banned drugs, worth Rs 80 lakh, was seized from the house of Nemai Roy, one of the arrested duo. Amit Chatterjee was picked up following a tip-off from Roy. The police said the duo supplied drugs to Budge Budge, Mahestala and adjacent areas.

Woman dead

A 32-year-old woman, identified as Purnima, was found dead in her room in Imambaksh Lane in Burtola on Wednesday morning. Police said the body bore no injury mark.

Fee protest

The guardians of around 200 students of Lycee School blocked the Rashbehari Avenue crossing for 20 minutes on Wednesday afternoon to protest the “steep hike” in tuition fees.

Cheat threat

A gang hurled bombs at Kanti Memorial High School in Barrackpore on Wednesday after some HS examinees were not allowed to cheat during the geography test. No one was arrested.
