Shillong, Jan. 30: The first meeting of the Northeast MPs’ Forum outside New Delhi will be held in Gangtok in mid-February. It will discuss how the Sikkim model can be adopted by the Northeast for peace and development.
Sikkim MP P.D. Rai told reporters today that the topic of discussion for the two-day meet, beginning February 12, would be Enabling Prosperity to the People of Northeast Through Peace.
According to Rai, the Sikkim model, where peace and development go hand in hand, can be adopted by the northeastern states to ensure prosperity.
He said unlike the previous meetings in Delhi, the one in Sikkim would bring together experts from the Northeast on one platform to express concrete suggestions for prosperity of the Northeast which has been afflicted by insurgency for long.
Experts from various fields and places, including those from IIM Ahmedabad, will also take part in the meet.
“We also want the MPs from the Northeast to prepare a vision for the Northeast for the coming five years which will help accelerate development,” he said.
Sikkim Speaker K.T. Gyaltsen said the people of the Northeast should first be educated on the futility of insurgency in the region.
Employment opportunities in tourism, if properly tapped, could bring overall development of the Northeast, he added.
“If we can provide employment opportunities to the youths in the Northeast, their enrolment to insurgency can be reduced,” he said.
Both Rai and Gyaltsen said the non-existence of insurgency in Sikkim had helped in the state’s progress and accelerated other infrastructure development.
“We hope the Northeast MPs’ meet in Sikkim will find ways and means to accelerate progress in the Northeast,” Gyaltsen said.
