Hospital probe

A three-member committee was set up by the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital authorities on Tuesday to probe the disappearance of a newborn from the premises six months ago. The child’s grandmother, Seema Naskar, lodged a police complaint on Tuesday. According to the complaint, Pinki Naskar, a resident of Kasba, gave birth to twins in the hospital on July 8. She and one of the twins later died. Seema had requested the hospital authorities to keep the baby that survived in the paediatric ward for two days. She alleged that the baby was missing when she went after two days. The hospital authorities said the committee would submit its report within a week.

Tutors’ fast

About 35 teachers of Higher Secondary schools, working under contract, started a “fast unto death” in front of Bikash Bhavan in Salt Lake on Tuesday demanding permanent jobs. The teachers, members of a CPM-controlled union, said around 1,200 contractual teachers were working in various Higher Secondary schools in Bengal.

Jute fire

A fire broke out in a jute manufacturing unit on Andul Road in Howrah on Tuesday, damaging goods worth thousands of rupees. Police said the blaze started around 1.30pm. Five tenders took over two hours to douse the flames. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.


Services were disrupted for five hours in the Howrah-Kharagpur section of South Eastern Railway on Tuesday because of a snag at Howrah station. Several trains were short terminated and delayed.


Participants in a religious procession blocked the tracks at Hridaypur station for more than an hour after a Sealdah-bound train jumped signal and came dangerously close to them. Nine trains were delayed.


A 32-year-old taxi driver was killed after his vehicle was hit by a speeding lorry on Coal Berth Road in the port area on Tuesday morning. Sailendra Pratap Pandey was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Bike stolen

A black Bajaj Pulsar (WB52H 5191) was stolen from Taltala on Monday.
