NLFT abducts two businessmen

Agartala: Banned NLFT rebels abducted two tribal businessmen, Shanajay Tripura, 41, and Laxmi Charan Chakma, 39, from Thalcherra market under Dharamanagar subdivision at gunpoint on Saturday night. The abducted businessmen were believed to have been taken across the border to the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. Dharmanagar SDPO Subrato Debbarma, who had rushed to the spot shortly after receiving the information, said Thalcherra market did not have any security presence nearby when the NLFT cadres stormed the market at 7pm. He said most of the 30-odd shops were closed when the militants came.

4-yr-old shot

Tinsukia: Four-year-old Jalal Kharia was shot dead while her mother Sukurmoni Kharia was injured when a group of criminals attacked the family on Saturday night at Rumaigabharu village in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam. Tinsukia superintendent of police Diganta Bora said it could be a family feud that resulted in the incident.

Truckers’ protest

Dhubri: Truckers operating from the coal mine area of Chalang in the West Khasi Hills have stopped plying their vehicles from Sunday because of threat to their lives and extortion from the local people. Besides, thousands of daily wage earners of Goalpara district who were working in the coal mines have also left and returned to their homes.


Udalguri: A youth was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in the Nauholia area under Majbat forest range along the India-Bhutan border in Udalguri district in the wee hours of Sunday.
