Rural polls on June 28

Siliguri, May 6: Elections to the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad will be held on June 28 for which the notification will be issued by the end of this month, subdivisional officer Sharad Dwivedi today said.

Over 3.22 lakh voters will exercise their franchise to elect seven members of the Parishad, 64 members of the four panchayat samitis of Matigara, Naxalbari, Phansidewa and Khoribari and 360 members in 22 gram panchayats.

In the 2004 elections, the Left Front had got all seven seats of the parishad and 41 in the panchayat samitis. The Congress had secured 20 seats and the Trinamul and BJP one each while election did not held in one. In the gram panchayat, the Front candidates emerged winners in 60 per cent of the 405 seats, which were reduced to 360 this time.

Fee blockade

Siliguri: The Chhatra Parishad set up a blockade at Hashmi Chowk here at 12 noon on Wednesday for around 30 minutes. They were protesting against the fee hike in ICSE and CBSE affiliated schools of Siliguri and Jalpaiguri.

Betel nuts

Siliguri: Customs officials seized betel nuts worth Rs 1.5 lakh from Burdwan Road on Wednesday. The contraband, smuggled from Nepal, was on way to Dhupguri. The vehicle has been seized but the driver escaped.

Fatal drive

Balurghat: Jakir Hussain (28), the driver of a car of Baroidanga in Kushmandi, died in a road accident on Wednesday. Police said Jakir was teaching 12-year-old Imtiaz Ali to drive when he suddenly lost control over the vehicle near the Kalikamora Bridge and jumped out of the car, sensing danger. But the vehicle turned on its side and fell on him. Imtiaz, the son of the owner of the car, escaped unhurt.

Cottage fire

Kalimpong: A cottage was completely gutted in a fire here on Wednesday. The cottage belonged to P. C. Rai, a retired soldier of the Gorkha Rifles. No one was present in the house at the time of the mishap.
