New deputy mayor

Siliguri, Dec.29: Dilip Roy of the RSP will be the new deputy mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. The decision was taken at a Darjeeling district Left Front meeting, said Asok Bhattacharya, the convener of the Front, today. Roy was the member, mayor-in-council (MMIC) of the electricity department.

Animesh Banerjee of the CPI and Dewkinandan Dalmia of the Forward Bloc will be the new MMICs of the building and environment departments.

CII seminar

Siliguri: The north Bengal zonal council of the CII will organise a seminar on food processing, its opportunities and challenges here on Tuesday.

Illegal fuel

Siliguri: Matigara Police seized six motorcycles on Monday from Paribahan Nagar in a raid. The motorcycles were used to sell illegal petrol and diesel in the area. Drums containing illegal petrol were also seized.

Besu polls

Calcutta: The student body elections of Bengal Engineering and Science University will take place (Besu) on Tuesday after three years. Over 1,600 students will cast their votes to select their representatives in 53 seats in the under-graduate section. Around 400 students in the post graduate streams will select 45 representatives. Over 100 policemen will be deployed on the campus.

Bangla arrest

Calcutta: Ten Bangladeshis who were trying to return to their country without valid documents were arrested from Jagaddalghat in Barrackpore. Police said the people worked as labourers and had come from Chandernagore in Hooghly. A compact disc and a few computer hardware parts were recovered from their them.

Travel offer

Calcutta: Singapore Airlines announced on Monday a promotional offer in which passengers can travel to select destinations in Singapore for Rs 16,830 and South East Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Bangkok, Denpasar, Langkawi and Kuching) for Rs 23,980. Bookings for this offer can be made from January 15 and will be valid from December 29 to March 31.
