A number of near-mishaps at the level crossing near Bagha Jatin railway station, in the southern part of the city, has prompted the authorities to ask for guards to control the traffic.
Swapan Kumar Mondal, the divisional railway manager of Sealdah, has asked for two guards from the district superintendent of police. “At least the rash drivers can be checked,” he pointed out.
On Monday night, a major accident was averted when a speeding Matador rammed through the boom of the level crossing gate. “We feared that a serious accident had occurred but fortunately, no train was approaching from either side,” said a railway official.
The absence of the boom caused problems for trains and other vehicles passing through the level crossing. The situation came back to normal on Tuesday afternoon after the boom was repaired.
