Left salvo at Cong

New Delhi, Dec. 22: The CPM today said the Congress-led Centre needed to work harder to combat communalism and warned that “imperialism” was an “equal” threat, implying that it had not softened its stand on the nuclear deal.

“The one you do not fight become greater,” party leader Sitaram Yechury said at the end of a three-day meeting of the CPM’s central committee.

Although the criticism was mainly aimed at the government’s inability to implement the Sachar committee’s recommendations to improve the plight of Muslims, sources said the communists would put the Congress in the dock if the BJP retains Gujarat.

CPI poll warning

CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said mid-term polls were possible next year but the Left should not be blamed. “If the Prime Minister fails to address the issues raised by us with regard to the nuclear deal, there will have to be a mid-term poll,” he said in Krishnagar, about 85km from Calcutta.
