Murder scan on servant

A 66-year-old woman was found dead at her home on Shyampukur Street on Tuesday morning.

Sabita Bandopadhyay’s body was recovered from her bedroom with blood oozing from her nose. Habu, her servant, was found in the bathroom, his hands and legs tied and mouth gagged with a tape. Jewellery worth a few lakhs were missing from an almirah in the room.

Habu, who slept on the floor in Sabita’s first-floor room on Monday night, has been detained for questioning. “It seems the elderly woman was choked to death with a pillow,” said the deputy commissioner of police (north), Damayanti Sen.

“Around 6am, a tenant on the ground floor told me that he could hear Habu’s muffled cries from the first floor. I went upstairs and found the door of my mother’s room open. My mother was lying on the bed, blood oozing from her nose, while Habu was tied up in the bathroom,” said Anindita Nag Chowdhury, Sabita’s daughter. who had come to the Shyampukur Street house a day before.

“We did not hear any sound last night. We suspect Habu is the culprit,” alleged Anindita. Neither of Sabita’s two sons was in the house on Monday.
