Guwahati, July 22: The under-10 boys' champion of the Jorhat leg, local boy Vishal Garg, has entered the semi-finals of the fourth all-Assam ranking badminton championship that got under way at Gauhati University indoor hall here today.

Garg, who defeated Dipjyoti Dutta of Guwahati 15-6, 15-0 in the quarters, has been joined by Mohmmad Ahsas of Nagaon, Rana Kumar Baruah of Sivasagar and Marvej Raj of Nagaon in the under-10 boys' semi-finals.

In the quarterfinals, Ahsas beat Riki Pal of Guwahati 15-11, 15-7, Rana defeated Ronit Bharali (Nagaon) 15-5, 15-5 and Marvej got the better of Anshu Plaban Nath (Tezpur) 15-3, 15-8.

The only contest at an under-10 match on the first day was the first round encounter between Riki Pal and Rishikesh Phukan of Jorhat. Pal won 1-15, 15-4, 15-10. Local girls Prerona Das and Nipasha Mahanta have advanced into the second round in the under-10 girls' event.

Ronjoy Bhattacharjee of Guwahati defeated Bhaskarjyya Barua of Sivasagar 15-3, 14-17, 15-1 in a first round match of the under-13 boys' singles. Altogether 140 shuttlers from eight districts are participating.
