Dhanbad, Dec. 20: Police claimed to have destroyed five bunkers of the Maoists Communist Centre in the afternoon swoop at forests in Tundi and Peertand in the Dhanbad-Giridih region, reports our correspondent.
The police said they recovered seven detonators, Naxalite literature, wristwatches and audio-cassettes from the rebel hideouts. A camera, Rs 15,000 in cash and police uniforms were also recovered from the bunkers, the police claimed.
The offensive — code-named Operation Jungle — follows the arrest of two key rebels, Laxman Manjhi and Manoj Manjhi, yesterday by the Tundi police. The rebels were nabbed when they were trying to abduct the driver of a jeep.
Tundi and its adjacent Peertand area was once considered a stronghold of the extremist outfit. The police said after the combing operations, launched by the Giridih police in the Parasnath Hills — a Jain pilgrim centre — the outlaws had retreated to Peertand and Tundi areas through the dense forests.
