Chennai, Nov. 28: At least 13 people have died after consuming illicit liquor, spoiling the flavour of the Tamil Nadu government’s prohibition policy, reports our special correspondent.
Ten people are battling for life at the government general hospital after consuming arrack near Ponneri in Tiruvallur district last evening.
The tragedy comes on the eve of Madras High Court allowing partial sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor by a limited number of private outlets, and the bulk of retail sales being taken over tomorrow by the state-owned marketing corporation.
The affected people, mostly casual labourers and farm hands, continue to come to the hospital with symptoms of poisoning. Several of them are complaining of loss of vision.
