Subscription dispute turns ugly

Calcutta, Sept. 17: A 40-year-old resident of Ekbalpore was beaten up this afternoon by members of a local club for requesting police to ensure that he and his neighbours are not harassed as in previous years over puja subscription.

P.P. Thomas, a resident of Asha Apartment on Bhu Kailash Road, was admitted to hospital and the police arrested a member of the local Young Boys’ Society.

“We have learnt that the club members forcibly collect subscription from the residents of the housing complex every year. Besides, they forcibly tap power from the apartment’s transformer,” said Soumen Mitra, deputy commissioner of police, detective department.

Two days ago, on behalf of the housing complex’s residents, Thomas called the police. “He requested the officials of Ekbalpore police station over telephone to please look into the matter and keep a close eye on the club members,” Mitra added.

Some club members, who got wind of Thomas’ call to the police, surrounded him as he came out of the complex today. “Thomas was kicked and punched. The club members continued even after he slumped on the road. Local people rushed him to hospital,” said a local police officer.

Later policemen rushed to the spot and carried out raids. They rounded up Barun Das, a club member. “Police are looking for others. Raids are on to track down the culprits,” added Mitra.
