Calcutta: The Telegraph Merchants’ Cup golf competition, presented by Royal Challenge, got underway at Tollygunge Club on Tuesday with 73 of the 78 teams teeing off.
The top draw in the morning was Lakshman Singh of defending champions Williamson Magor A playing alongside Anup Singh of ITC Limited and Lt Gen. J.S. Varma, AVSM, GOC-in-C Eastern Command.
Though Lakshman performed below calibre to return a six-over 76, it was good enough to ensure his team the lead. In second place in Division I was McLeod & Co. represented by Anant Bajoria (77), followed by TISCO A (S. Tiwari, 79).
In Division II, George Williamson (Assam) Ltd C, represented by K.N. Devaya (86), took the first day’s honours, with RPG-CESC B (A.C. Sud) in second place and B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre (Gautam Mullick) in third. In Division III, S.E. Railways A, represented by Chetan Srivastav (92), was in the lead.
Kapil Sud of Sen & Singh Engineers won the day’s best individual award in Challenge Cup.
