Coochbehar, June 14: Two idols of Balaram and the gold and silver ornaments adorning the statuettes were stolen from a temple in Bhuchungmari, a village under Tufangunge subdivision in Coochbehar district, last night.
On the basis of preliminary investigations, police have arrested two persons for their involvement in the crime.
The night guard was the first to notice that the idols were missing. He informed the priest, who, in turn, called the police.
District deputy superintendent of police Praveen Kumar said: “The probe is on and while interrogating the arrested duo, we hope to get the names of the others involved and nab the culprits soon.”
The temple is a major attraction for devotees from eastern India. Residents have demanded a fast inquiry into the incident.
According to police sources, the temple is run by a trust that manages its property. One of the idols was about a foot high and made of an alloy of eight precious and semi-precious metals, the sources added.
District administration sources said policemen have been deployed in the area in strength to maintain peace.
